Love Letters

For the in class assignment I chose to illustrate the word gimme gimme, I thought the playful nature of the word worked well with the cursive letter forms I had chosen. I experimented with various forms, and color palettes. I chose to highlight the ME in GIMME GIMME in order to emphasize the selfish, greedy nature of the word. Ultimately I thought this word form looked best in a repetitive pattern. I also thought the design would make a great tongue in cheek logo for a clothing company and decided to present it on a t-shirt.

The next step in the project was to create a pixel font inspired by our wordform. I had a bit of a hard time trying to resolve the smooth curves in the angular format of pixel fonts. Ultimately i chose to emphasize a sense of play in the proportions and through the use of exagerated ascenders and descenders.
Here's is the process:

The Hush Sound-The Lions Roar

Here is a great music video for The Hush Sound's song The Lions Roar. This video utilizes typography in a playful way. Check it out

Letters

I chose these letterforms from the signs I saw in L.A. because I was drawn to their decorative nature and textural quality. I also love the element of nostalgia and the fact that the signs are worn and textural.

california signage

Our brief this week got me thinking of typography within the context of an urban environment. Stylized letter forms and typefaces really impact and define our surroundings. Upon a recent trip to L.A. the first thing I noticed was how the contrast of pastel art deco architecture and bold 1950's neon signs really differentiate it from Montreal. Here are some LA pics:

It's everywhere!

After having watched Helvetica the first week of class my brain was focused on one thing,
spotting the infamous font. After class I went to grab a drink with some friends and I counted 14
helvetica sightings in the quick jaunt from class to the bar. Who would've thought a documentary about a typeface could be so riveting?
